Google on Friday began switching off Google Assistant on Android mobile devices, starting a staggered phaseout that will leave Gemini as the only voice assistant on hundreds of millions of phones, tablets, and wearables. The shutdown, which Google first detailed in an email to users in early August, formally begins today, September 4 โ€” though the company cautioned that "this process may take a few weeks to reach everyone," according to 9to5Google, which first reported the notice.

The email's language leaves no room for a return. "Once availability is removed, you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices," the company told users. Officially, Google says Assistant is "being discontinued" and that "Gemini โ€” our next-generation AI-powered assistant โ€” is now the assistant experience on Android."

The deprecation reaches well beyond the phone. According to 9to5Google, it also covers Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and earbuds, and vehicles running Android Auto projected from a user's mobile device. There is one notable carve-out: cars with Google built-in โ€” the native automotive platform found in vehicles from Volvo, Polestar, General Motors, and others โ€” will keep Google Assistant working beyond September 4. The announcement does not yet apply to other form factors, though Google has said Gemini is headed to Google TV devices and to Google Home speakers and smart displays.

A decade of Assistant ends on a schedule Google set in March 2025

The cutoff caps a transition Google has been telegraphing for a year and a half. When Brian Marquardt, Google's senior director of product management for the Gemini app, announced the migration plan in March 2025, he framed generative AI as a new "platform shift" and said millions of people had already moved from Assistant to Gemini voluntarily, as Inc. reported. The end of Assistant was originally penciled in for late 2025 before being pushed into 2026; until now, the Gemini app has carried a "Switch to Google Assistant" option for users who found the newer AI lacking. That escape hatch is what disappears starting today.

The usage numbers explain why Google is willing to force the issue. Gemini reached 950 million monthly active users in the second quarter of 2026, more than doubling from 450 million a year earlier, while daily use tripled, according to figures from Alphabet's Q2 earnings cited by Inc. Assistant, for its part, was helping more than 500 million people each month as of January 2020, the last time Google disclosed a figure; the company has not said how many holdouts remain. Assistant launched in 2016 alongside the original Google Home speaker and the first Pixel phone, and for years served as the connective tissue of Google's ambient-computing ambitions.

What users stand to lose โ€” at least for now

For the remaining loyalists, the anxiety is practical rather than sentimental. Gemini handles calls, messages, routines, navigation, and many device controls, but some services and actions that Assistant supported remain unavailable or simply work differently, Inc. notes. User complaints cataloged in response to Google's announcement cluster around a few recurring pain points: unreliable smart-home control, difficulty playing a specific song on a specific speaker, slower responses to simple commands, and inconsistent answers to identical requests. Guides published ahead of the cutoff, including TechRadar's, recommend that users test their most important routines, smart-home commands, and in-car voice actions on Gemini now rather than discovering gaps after Assistant vanishes from their device.

Google's own messaging acknowledges the stakes only obliquely. "We are committed to providing a smooth transition and are confident that Gemini will offer you an even more capable and helpful assistant experience," the company told users. What it has not done is publish a feature-parity checklist โ€” an omission that has fueled much of the frustration, particularly among drivers and smart-home households that built daily habits around Assistant's more predictable, command-style behavior.

Into the Google graveyard

With today's move, Assistant begins its march into Google's famously crowded product graveyard โ€” chronicled by the independent website Killed by Google โ€” alongside Stadia, Hangouts, Google Podcasts, and Google Domains, as Inc. observes. Few entries in that cemetery, however, were ever as deeply embedded in daily life. Assistant answered questions, set timers, routed commutes, and controlled lights for a decade across phones, watches, cars, TVs, and speakers.

The transition is also a statement about where Google believes consumer AI is heading. Gemini is not a command interpreter but a generative system Google is weaving through Search, Workspace, Android, and its hardware line, and keeping a legacy assistant alive alongside it had become both an engineering burden and a brand contradiction. Still unresolved is timing for the form factors left in limbo: Gemini is confirmed for Google TV and Google Home speakers and displays, but Google has not given dates, and it remains unclear when the docked Pixel Tablet will make the switch, 9to5Google reports.

  • Google begins removing Google Assistant from Android phones and tablets on September 4, 2026; the rollout may take several weeks to reach every user
  • Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and earbuds, and phone-projected Android Auto are also affected; cars with Google built-in keep Assistant for now
  • Once Assistant is removed from a device, users cannot use it or switch back โ€” Gemini becomes the only option
  • Gemini reached 950 million monthly users in Q2 2026, more than double a year earlier, according to Alphabet earnings figures
  • Some Assistant features โ€” certain smart-home and media commands โ€” still lack full Gemini equivalents, and users are advised to test critical routines now

๐Ÿ’ก The Nexalytics Take

Killing a product used by hundreds of millions of people is never just a product decision โ€” it is a bet that the replacement is good enough that the anger fades faster than the migration completes. Google's numbers say the bet is already won: with Gemini at 950 million monthly users and daily usage tripling year over year, the holdouts are a rounding error, and maintaining two assistants was pure cost. But the complaints dogging this transition are not about AI hype fatigue; they are about reliability in the exact moments โ€” driving, cooking, controlling a dark house โ€” where voice assistants earned their place. Generative systems are probabilistic, and a timer that works 97 percent of the time is worse than a dumb one that works every time. Google is trading Assistant's determinism for Gemini's capability and betting users will accept the exchange rate. Watch three things from here: how quickly Gemini for Home closes the smart-home gap before Google's own speaker lineup hits its transition date, whether the Android Auto experience generates a visible backlash as the rollout spreads over the coming weeks, and whether regulators in Europe โ€” already circling defaults and choice screens โ€” take an interest in a switch users cannot undo.
